Some men are sexually strong and can satisfy their partners almost every time they have intercourse.  Unfortunately, certain men experience problems in their sexual life; they cannot have or keep a normal erection. This can be devastating in their life. Although it is not a life-threatening medical condition, erectile dysfunction is a very embarrassing disease a man can have.

This is a common problem these days. It is estimated that about 1 out of 10 men suffer from erectile dysfunction. The condition can be temporary, due to a medical condition or treatment; or permanent due an incurable disease or an organic factor. Regardless, an effective treatment is necessary. But before considering treatment, it is important to know what is what a normal erection.

In men, a healthy erection is characterized by strong blood flow in their penis which makes it
firmer, engorged, enlarged and hard for a certain time. The erection is usually provoked by a signal in the brain due to complex interaction of environmental, psychological, neural, vascular and endocrine factors. This is often associated with sexual arousal or sexual attraction. This entire phenomenon of attaining erection and preserving it occurs as a result of chain of various processes, which are not discussed in this article. Erectile dysfunction occurs when any of the processes fails to work causing the penis to unable to hold blood in the fibrous tissues. This situation leads to losing of penile erection well before the climax.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction

Several factors and causes can lead a person to experience erectile problem: some are physical and others are mental/psychological in nature. Main physical causes of impotence include side effects of certain drugs (certain hair loss drugs for instance); certain therapies or treatments (chemotherapy side effects or radiation side effects for instance), certain injuries to genitals, chronic diseases such as diabetes, diseases related to nervous systems, cardiovascular problems: high blood pressure, enlarged heart muscle, etc.

Various other medical conditions can also cause erectile dysfunction: multiple sclerosis, kidney diseases, and obesity are a few of them. Certain bad habits such as overdoing masturbation, drinking alcohol or tobacco consumption, illegal drug consumption such as cocaine and heroin can cause lack of desire in sex due to the fact these habits tend to damage the genital tissues and cause the penis to hang loosely or limply and not attain a strong erection. Along with the causes mentioned above, malnutrition or poor eating habit can also be the reasons of erectile dysfunction in certain men.

As mentioned above, mental issues can be the root of erectile problems: severe stress, severe clinical depression, mental imbalance, and any mental inability to concentrate and attain full confidence in sexual relationship can lead to the problem. In these cases, rather fail to have erection, the man has a lack of desire for sex and cannot hold normal erection.
