Selenium and Prostate Cancer

Human body has a lot of cells which normally grow and die naturally when they are healthy. However, sometimes normal cells turn into cancerous cells lead to the development of malignancy in the affected organ. There is no danger when the cancer cells do not multiply in an uncontrollable manner. When it comes to prostate cancer, things go out of control if cancerous cells multiply very fast and spread the malignancy rapidly. This explains the fatality of prostate cancer and the need to stop the proliferation of cancerous cells in the prostate gland.

Although lifestyle leading to prostate cancer can start from yon age, the disease is more common among men over fifty (50). This is a serious medical condition which causes the death of thousands of men every year. In fact, prostate cancer is one among the top ten reasons of male medical fatalities. Therefore, it is important for all men to eat a balanced and healthy diet and have a healthy lifestyle to prevent from them from being a victim of the disease.  One of the food supplements shown to have anti-cancer properties on the prostatic gland is selenium. The supplement helps to reduce the chances of contracting prostate cancer.

Selenium for Better Prostate Health

Seleniumhas shown to have an increased value to overall health and wellbeing in recent years. It works by strengthening the immune system protecting the body against the effects of free radicals.  Prostate cancer is more common among older people because the ability to fight these cells gets drastically reduced with age. Free radicals also get accumulated because of age; yet another reason for contracting cancer in older men. The oncologists and researchers opine that Selenium looks for free radicals much before they get a chance to attack or damage the prostate cells.

Regular consumption of selenium helps in protecting the prostate from malignancy. More than forty nine percent of the people who have tried selenium supplements were able to prevent prostate cancer. The supplement is even more effective in preventing cancer when taking it directly from foods: Brazil Nuts, Sunflower Seeds, tomatoes, asparagus, edible seeds, whole grains(wheat germ, barley, brown rice, oats), Fish (tuna, sardines, salmon), poultry (chicken, turkey), eggs, mushrooms (button, crimini, shiitake), onions. Since prostate cancer shows up only at the later stage, it is wise to have the selenium supplements and stay safe.

Selenium, when combined with Vitamin E, C and beta-carotene, works wonders. It blocks all negative chemical reactions in the body that generate free radicals, cause of damaging DNA and degeneration of healthy cells. This explains the need of consuming recommended dosage of at least 200 micrograms of selenium everyday through foods that contain it. However, processed selenium supplements must be avoided as they do not have authentic nutrition in them.

Selenium is not a self-reliant treatment for prostate cancer. It is a preventive agent that inhibits growth of tumor and regulates natural life-span of cells, making sure they do not turn malignant.

It would work better if combined with other medication or treatment, as prescribed by doctor.

Avoid Overdosing of Selenium

Though selenium appears to be harmless, overdose may cause some side effects. The dosage of selenium intake must always be decided after consulting a doctor lest it may lead to several complications like:

  • Nail and hair brittleness
  • Odd taste in the mouth
  • Strong breath odor
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability in behavior
  • Weakening of muscles
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Hair loss

Some serious side effects of excessive intake of selenium may even cause skin rashes, heart failure, stroke, cardiac arrest and even death. Eating foods containing it is the best option to get your selenium intake safely.
